Interview with Cyrus Rowe

Hello guys,hope you are well,

I am Giannis (@skg_edi) and this article is about a photographer whose work i came to admire through IG. My goal is for you to get to know the man behind the camera. I am so glad that he accepted my offer and ,therefore, became part of this small community.

Please let us know at the comments below your opinions its really helfpful to know your comments and feel free to follow us on our IG below.(click on our names)

I would like to introduce you Cyrus Rowe

1) Tell us a few words about yourself so that people know you?

I am a salaryman working for a medical company based in Tokyo, Japan. Although I was born in Japan, most of my life was spend in Ontario, Canada. I visited Japan here and there, and always found the culture and people there fascinating. Covid has been restricting my domestic travelling, I hope to explore all the shrines, restaurants, nature, and people that I have yet to encounter.

2) What was it that made you get involved in photography and who was it that inspired you to get more involved?

What made me get into photography was a YouTube video I watched. The youtuber is Pierre T. Lambert, and his one video on “taking strangers” got me hooked. With one camera, he was walking around asking strangers to be in his photo. Even though he just met these people, he takes beautiful photos of them. I myself love meeting new people. Just like Pierre, I wanted to make someone laugh and capture their dazzling smile. I got more involved through taking his course that is done online. He has a Facebook community that allows people to post pictures and get comments. On top of that, I am also part of an Instagram group with Giannis. Through that, I met more people around the world. Just by carrying a camera, I met all these fantastic photographers and models.

3) What is your biggest goal when it comes to photography? where do you want to reach?

The one theme I always try to convey in my photos are stories. What does the viewer think of when they see a picture that I took? I do not want to take a picture that is simply beautiful, although that is important. I feel like many photographers can take a picture that looks spectacular, but what makes the photo unique is the story that comes with that photo. This is something that I struggle with, but I hope that I can tell unique stories like Pierre and other great photographers that I respect.

4) What is your favorite style of photography and why and which technique do you like the most and why?

My favorite style of photography is snapshots (Street portraits mainly). I love the environment of just me and my camera. My mind is solely focused on the composition, framing, color, subject, etc. I feel snapshots is what improves me as a photographer, since you cannot control anything. I cannot tell the person to walk slower, or control the natural light for a better contrast. When I get an amazing shot, that feeling of accomplishment is unparalleled. My favorite technique is using flares from the natural light. Although you may want to avoid flares in certain shots, including them can create a sense of nostalgia or warmth. You have to get the right angle so it is quite difficult, especially when you are adding a human subject as well. These flares are hard to control so the right shot can make it very rewarding.

5) What would you like to say to someone who is just starting photography, what first advice would you give?

Always have fun. There are times where I feel stressed or wonder if I will continue pursuing photography. There are so many great photographers out there, I sometimes wonder what is the point. However, photography to me is a medium to express yourself. The angle, shutter speed, focal length, subject, these are all controlled by you. Every photo you take is conscious, and that represents who you are. So do not compare yourself with amazing instagrammers or youtubers. They have years of experiences and they too started where you are. Focus on what you love to take and eventually you will find a style. I’m still on the journey to finding my style, but when I do, hopefully there will be lot of other people who also finds my style enjoyable.

I feel really lucky that i have "met" Cyrus Rowe through IG because i truly admire his work. Wish someday to meet him in person cos i believe he is a really nice personality and have fun time with photography at night!

THANK YOU Cyrus Rowe
