Interview with Johnny Gavriil

Hello guys,hope you are well,

I am Giannis (@skg_edi) and this article is about a photographer whose work i came to admire through IG. My goal is for you to get to know the man behind the camera. I am so glad that he accepted my offer and ,therefore, became part of this small community.

I would like to introduce you Johnny

1) Tell us a few words about yourself so that people know you?

Hi everyone, my name is Johnny Gavriil, I am 33 years old from Athens, Greece.

I work in construction, mainly metal and aluminum constructions, which is a job I truly like, as it's a really creative and interesting field.

My hobbies include sports(football, basketball, running),gaming and of course Photography! I love listening to music(Greek hip hop mainly),going for walks and travelling when that is possible!Oh, and I love beer!

2) What was it that made you get involved in photography and who was it that inspired you to get more involved?

My first attempt to become a photographer took place 16 years ago ,when I was still in high school . A teacher of mine was doing bnw street photography, close up portraits of strangers mostly, and I found it a really interesting concept!

I bought a Sony compact camera with the hope I will start doing something similar, but really soon I got disappointed cause I was really shy at the time to get out and take photos of strangers. Even more, lacking the basic knowledge Johhny

about how a camera works and without the proper guidance, I lost my interest pretty quick.

The years passed and I didn't really get involved with photography, until last year, when I found by chance the Sony camera I had bought back then. I decided to get the battery charged and give it a go. Started watching courses online,

learning what I was missing back then, and I was really captivated by the potential of my old camera in the right hands! After that I really wanted to try street photography. So I bought a dslr camera and I started walking, and I haven't stopped since then.

3) What is your biggest goal when it comes to photography? where do you want to reach?

For the present moment I just enjoying what I am doing .I love that everyday there is something new to learn about photography, I love those long walks downtown watching stories unfold around me and at the moment those things is all I want!

If there is somewhat of a goal in my mind, is to learn as much as possible about the art of photography, but this is more like a procedure and not a goal, cause you can never learn everything about a form of art.

4) What is your favorite style of photography and why and which technique do you like the most and why?

I love night street photography, the lights of the city combined with the stories of people gives me a feeling that I cannot describe! I just love it!!

When it comes to techniques, I like to search for frames and work around them until I find the best composition with the right angle and the right lighting.

Many times I revisit the same place on a different hour of the day or with different weather conditions to see what looks better.

5) What would you like to say to someone who is just starting photography, what first advice would you give?

I would say, go for it!! Take your camera, shoot as much as you can, edit as much as you can, cause editing plays an important part, and on the way keep learning everything you can about photography.

Also, you don't need a personal style from the day one! Capture everything you love and you'll find your personal style down the road!

I feel really lucky that i have "met" Johnny through IG because i truly admire his work. Wish someday to meet him in person cos i believe he is a really nice personality and have fun time with photography at night!
