Interview with Manolis from Leros

I am Giannis and this article is about a photographer whose work i came to admire through IG. My goal is for you to get to know the man behind the camera. I am so glad that he accepted my offer and ,therefore, became part of this small community.

I would like to introduce you Manolis

1) Tell us a few words about yourself so that people know you?

I am Manolis, I am 26 years old and I come from a small island of Greece called Leros. I have studied chemical engineering at the University of Patras and from my student years until now, I have been into photography on an amateur and professional as well level.

2) What was it that made you get involved in photography and who was it that inspired you to get more involved?

As a student I loved traveling very much. Sometimes I would even book tickets a week before and travel to places alone. Being to all these beautiful places I couldn't not take pictures of what I was seeing. So the one thing led to another, before I knew I would buy myself a camera and start photographing everything. Being into photography made me love it so much that later I would start photoshooting things outside the traveling part. Here comes my cousin, who happens to be a photographer and he pushed me to get more involved with it.

3) What is your biggest goal when it comes to photography? where do you want to reach?

My favorite category is travel/documentary photography, either this comes through street or portrait style photography. I always aim to have a human presence in my pictures because I believe that it gives a special vividness to the image. It tells the stories of strangers and makes the viewer take the place of the depicted. Except the portraits and if I have not ask the people, I am always careful not to make the depicted ones recognizable. I shoot with any camera, digital or film and I use many techniques, whatever I feel suitable at the moment.

4) What is your favorite style of photography and why and which technique do you like the most and why?

My biggest goal well... I just want to get better day by day. Even the most experienced learn something new everyday so you have to push yourself in order to get better and that's what I am trying to do. My ultimate goal would be to travel all around the world and manage to photograph every place and person I can. Spread the foreign cultures and tell stories that no one has ever heard before. I want to get to the point where I will travel, take photos and be able to make a living from it without doing any extra work or photographing things that do not express me (events, commercials etc).

5) What would you like to say to someone who is just starting photography, what first advice would you give?

Photography changed me sooo much!! I started experiencing life differently. Wherever I go, I visualize everything around me as the best image I can take. It changed my perspective of how I see the world. I realized how simple things, like taking a picture, can make you happy, make you forget all your problems. This is what I want to say to the people who are just starting photography. Love what you do and put your passion into it and it will give you back way more!!

Nowadays when people start photography they are like ''I want to buy this and I want that and I need this to be as good as him'' and etc. The best oven doesn't make the best pizza, the best cook does. Try to learn with what you have and make the most of your equipment before buying something else.

I feel really lucky that i have "met" Manolis through IG because i truly admire his work. Wish someday to meet him in person cos i believe he is a really nice personality and have fun time with photography.
