Landscape Photography

Text Translation Katerina

We all love trees, rivers, mountains, beautiful creeks, lakes and all those elements that constitute nature’s canvas and fill us with moments of relaxation, peace and wellness. Sometimes a simple walk by the sea, in the woods or just a park, can greatly contribute to a change in our mood.

We often like to capture in images these therapeutic elements either as a reminder or with the purpose of demonstrating our work as photographers. The scenery is one of the most appreciated subjects as far as the art of photography is concerned and is celebrated by the public as a whole. The technological advances have lead to the use of mobile phones instead of cameras in order to capture a moment. But for this to be accomplished we need to follow certain steps, steps that can helps us frame our pictures correctly and provide our audience with the sensation that they are present in the exact moment our picture was taken.

To begin with we use a horizontal frame so as to offer a sense of width in our scenery. Once we choose our subject, we divide our frame into three levels. The upper one consists of the sky, the middle of the horizon and the lower and last one of the ground. In case we want to emphasize one of those levels, which is only natural, we can offer them a larger portion in our frame. If, for instance, we want to put our emphasis on the sky we will place it in the two thirds of our frame subsequently downscaling the horizon and the ground.

Once we have established position and frame, we are ready to take the next step. In other words it’s time to take a picture! We can choose a time and a subject of our session. What follows is a scenery photo session that took place in Vouliagmeni where you can witness in detail everything stated above.

Last but not least is the equipment one should carry. Apart from our camera, it’s equally important to carry a tripod and choose various camera filters so as to balance the light when our own camera is in need of some ‘assistance’. The best filter to carry is the polarizing filter which reduces reflections as well as the stop of exposure in our camera, when necessary.

I hope you can experiment and create so when the period of quarantine is finally over we can all enjoy the simple pleasures in life such as household chores! Always remember that our best assets are our eyes, our imagination and our passion. I hope you stay safe and creative!
